Psychosocial Rehabilitation/Community Based Rehabilitation Services

Why Psychosocial Rehabilitation?

Community Based Rehabilitation Services (CBRS) also known as Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) is a program designed for adults who are seeking recovery from severe and persistent mental health disorders and are in need of developing skills to facilitate independent living and enhance quality of life.

Individuals with mental health disorders are often challenged by a wide variety of health, vocational, financial, interpersonal and social needs. Many need assistance in building skills to meet the demands of daily living and to grow toward self sufficiency.

Defining Psychiatric Rehabilitation

Psychiatric rehabilitation promotes recovery, full community integration, and improved quality of life for persons who have been diagnosed with any mental health condition that seriously impairs their ability to lead meaningful lives. Psychiatric rehabilitation services are collaborative, person-directed and individualized. These services are an essential element of the health care and human services spectrum, and should be evidence-based. They focus on helping individuals develop skills and access resources needed to increase their capacity to be successful and satisfied in the living, working, learning, and social environments of their choice.

Evidence shows that psychiatric rehabilitation services markedly improve a person’s potential for recovery. Based on principles that respect the capacity of every person to learn and grow, and to make independent choices on matters that are important, psychiatric rehabilitation works. This evidence-based approach has fundamentally altered the way we think about mental illness, and the potential for a life with meaning and hope for persons living with a mental illness. http://www.psychrehabassociation.org
